Talisman of El by Alecia Stone

Talisman of El (Talisman of El, #1)Talisman of El by Alecia Stone
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Talisman of El is a fun story full of adventure and magic. The characters were great and their development and struggles quite realistic. I really enjoyed the author's smooth writing style. The story was well thought out and flowed easily, and the author's creativity shone through the pages.

Charlie was an easy character to like, an orphan who couldn't quite find somewhere to belong. Being placed placed in the care of Jacob, who turns out to be a not so nice guy, as a young teen starts a journey for Charlie which opens up a whole other world for him, one in which he just might discover a place for himself.

I thought the author did a great job of mixing so many elements into this one story. There was action/adventure, fantasy, sci-fi, and a bit of mythology. The world she created was original and quite detailed.

I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Everything Bared by Kristine Cayne

Everything Bared (Six-Alarm Sexy, #2)Everything Bared by Kristine Cayne
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

The best thing about Kristine Cayne's books is her characters. She has the ability to create these people in her stories that make you like them, love them, and be happy and sad for them. And of course I always love the woman who dares not to conform. Dani is my kind of girl. She is not refined or sophisticated, but she is the best thing that will ever happen to anyone who has the luck to cross her path. She knows what she wants and goes after it, despite what it makes others think of her. Will is everything Dani is not. He has his life planned down to the smallest details, and he is afraid to deviate from that plan. He knows what he wants, but not what he needs.

If opposites attract, Will does not stand a chance with Dani around. Their relationship is precarious, but they have this amazingly steamy chemistry that almost caused my Kindle to sweat! Whether they are fighting, teasing, or loving, Dani and Will burn up the pages. Add that to the humor and suspense written in, and you've got everything you need for a great story.

I love Kristine Cayne's writing and am looking forward to more from this series.

Aftershocks by Kristine Cayne

Aftershocks (Six-Alarm Sexy, #0.5)Aftershocks by Kristine Cayne
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

After reading books one and two in this series, I was excited to go back to this prequel and find out exactly what happened during the earthquake that was the start of this book series. The author took us back and reintroduced us to all the characters we know and love before we were in love with them. We got to see how Dani and Erica became friends and Erica and Jamie's volatile relationship.

I know series are meant to be read in order, but I'm actually glad I had read books one and two before this novella. If I had read this first, the burning curiosity created by Under His Command and Everything Bared would not have been there. If you have read or are planning on reading the Six Alarm Sexy series, this is a must read.

Muckydum - The Story of a Haunted Man by Stephen Chiarelli

Muckydum - The Story of a Haunted Man
by Stephen Chiarelli

Bill Hammond lives a lonely life yet shuns any intimate contact with the people around him. He is haunted by visions of people from his dysfunctional relationships, but does his best to ignore or avoid them. Conjuring up fleeting memories of his wife and teaching Shakespeare at the local college provide him with his only semblance of happiness. When he uncharacteristically befriends a withdrawn student in one of his classes he is inadvertently taken on an emotional roller coaster that sends him deeper into despair. On a frantic search for answers he comes to realize that he must affirm his own indiscretions in order to come to terms with how his life has come to pass.

Ten years later on a sunny spring morning Breanna Sutton is reluctantly meeting with Bill, who is now a recluse in an isolated cabin up in Northern Ontario. He had inexplicably started Breanna off on a rewarding and lucrative career that makes her feel bitterly obligated to the old man. She discovers Bill adrift in a world of fantasy and in severe need of medical attention. But the stubborn old man insists that she listen to his recount of his romance with his wife and its tragic conclusion before consenting to get the help he needs. Through the course of an agonizing day, Breanna learns what family truly means and about the obligations that come with it.

Muckydum will take you on the journey of a tormented man's pursuit to clear his conscience before it's too late and a woman's realization that life isn't measured solely by one's successes.

Q & A with Author Stephen Chiarelli

Q:  Tell us a little bit about your main characters.
A:
There are two main characters to the story.

William (Bill) Hammond is a professor of an elective course at a Community College. He's approaching retirement but knows the only happiness he experiences is when he's teaching. Bill wants all of his students to feel the excitement he feels for the subject matter and will go out of his way to try and make it happen, and his students love him for it. But his private life is very lonely and full of regrets. Both his parents suffered from mental illness and left him to fend for himself from an early age. Because of this neglect he created fantasies to help him through his childhood. When he became a young man, he turned these fantasies, combined with the dark reality, into two very successful novels for which he won critical acclaim. Then Bill met his wife-to-be Joanie and what started out as a storybook romance turned choppy and sour and left Bill incapable of establishing anymore close relationships. Bill has another deep secret that he hides from everybody. He even tries to hide it from himself. Bill is constantly visited by the dead.

The other main character, Breanna Sutton, enters the story ten years after we initially meet Bill, when he is retired and reclusive. Breanna is from an Upper Middle-class family. She likes the finer things in life. Her father was the dean of the college Bill taught at and her mother was Joanie's best friend. She was raised an only child and became used to getting what she desired and she feels entitled to the life she has. Her life is full of high-end material objects and a posh social life. But she does have a conscience that plays havoc in her relationship with Bill. Breanna is Bill's publisher, and she feels indebted to him because he was responsible for helping her find her first job. Breanna woefully responds to Bill's beck and call.

Q:  What do you love about writing?
A:
I love going through a story in my thoughts before getting it down on paper. I can spend weeks just thinking about different scenarios within the plot from beginning to end before I ever write anything down. And then when it all starts coming together and has me really excited, I sit in front of my computer and start the first chapter, or prologue if I feel so inclined to include. Then I get a new rush as I'm writing it and think of new twists to throw into the storyline. So I guess what I love about writing is the high, the discovery of new characters and the fact that I'm never exactly sure how it will end until I'm at the end.

Q:  What is the best advice you have been given?
A:
The best advice I've been given is to keep on writing, no matter how you're received, regardless of the lack of sales or recognition and no matter what the reviews say. Honing that skill and building on the experience is the best way to get established.

Q:  As a child, what did you want to be when you grew up?
A:
I wanted to be a hockey player as a kid. Dave Keon, a hockey player on the Toronto Maple Leafs in the sixties and seventies, was my idol. I would go out on the driveway and imagine myself in a game, shooting a tennis ball into a makeshift net. I always had stories in my head, imagining how the game would play out. However, I couldn't skate very well and never took the time to practice, so it was never to be.

Q:  If you could be on one reality TV show, what would it be?
A:
I don't really watch a lot of reality TV, absolutely none of the mainstream stuff. The only reality shows I've found that catch my interest are the likes of Storage Wars, American Pickers, Canadian Pickers and Auction Hunters. It's the excitement of the find, something rare from yesteryear, especially pop culture, that has since become legend. Those would be the type of shows I'd like to be on.

Q:  What book are you reading now?
A:
I'm currently reading Angela's Ashes by Frank McCourt. It reminds me quite a bit of another Pulitzer Prize winner, East of Eden by John Steinbeck. I'm approximately one hundred pages into the book, quite depressing so far. The book really puts you right in the middle of the Great Depression. It's not one of those books that I can read for hours on end. I'll read ten pages at a time and then put it down until the following day. If it continues along the same vein I'll eventually pick up something lighter to read at the same time, just to bring in a little bit of levity.

4 of 5 stars

I have been looking forward to Crimson Darkness ever since reading Crimson Midnight. The second book in the series is packed full of action, adventure, and danger. After London was plunged into darkness, everybody left is fighting to save themselves and the world as they knew it. All of our favorite characters are back, and there are some new players who I am very interested in reading more about. Rose is struggling with some decisions she has had to make and some new information she has to deal with about herself.

Crimson Darkness was much darker and more sinister than the first book. You can see the definitive shift from the old world to the new one and the toll the stress of fighting every moment for life has taken on the characters. Tension is high and everyone knows that likely disaster is imminent.

Once again the storyline was unpredictable and exciting. I love being surprised every step of the way. And, oh my God do the authors know how to write a cliffhanger! I will not be able to get my hands on the next book to find out what happens soon enough!!

I was lucky enough to get a personal interview with the lovely Thistle.  Read on to find out everything you've ever wanted to know about the feisty vampire!

Thanks for meeting with us today Thistle.  We know you're busy, so we won't take up too much of your time.  We'll start with the easy questions first…what's your favorite color?
Thistle: Purple. It’s so sexy, don’t you think?

Before all hell broke loose, what did you do to keep yourself busy when you were not hanging out with the werewolves?
Thistle: Party, party and read. I love reading. Give me a good steamy novel any time. I love to party. Being right there in a club or in a bar – it’s just so joyful. I don’t just love the nightlife because of me being a vampire and all that. I love the nightlife because it is fabulous. I love nights in London, the way it is all lit up, the atmosphere of the big city, the people, the music... I love to dance, to sing. Well, I loved nights in London, should I say, before... I miss those days.

What's on your iPod (um, do you still have your iPod)? See, easy questions.
Thistle: I like your questions, Sheri. You are fabulous. No, my iPod was destroyed. But you would have found some Prince, Peaches, Pet Shop Boys and Madonna on there. I really miss my iPod. It was purple. My mission is to get a new one at some point.

What's the best part about being a vampire? The worst?
Thistle: The best? The way all of my senses can experience the fine details of everything. The world is in full colour when you’re so switched on and connected to it like a vampire is. The sex is also rather wonderful.

The worst? My job as executioner. I had to do it, I know, but I found it hard. However, justice is justice. There has to be order.

Do you think vampires have gotten a bad reputation from the myths and legends that (everyday) people have fed? What is your favorite vampire story?
Thistle: Hmmm, I don’t think so really. The subject of vampires is so rich and there is a lot to play with. Vampires can feed that desire for the immortal lover to come and save you from a mundane life, or used as a tool for horror – sometimes even both. There isn’t really anything you can do about it. People will always write about us, put their spin on us with mythology and all that jazz. It can be very entertaining.

My favourite vampire story is The Vampire Lestat by Anne Rice. What a naughty boy! He is also a very complex and sad character. I enjoyed that very much indeed.

Now here come the harder questions…Now that the world is basically falling apart, what is your relationship like with Roman? With Rose?
Thistle: So much is happening, it’s hard... I love Rose dearly. She continues to amaze me with her strength and her determination. I just wish this craziness would slow down so we could have some girl time, you know? I miss that. It felt like I found my best friend and then she was ripped away. These are the days we live in right now. I could really do with a cocktail and a night out with Rose. It makes me sad. I will be there for her as best as I can, every step of the way.

Roman... I don’t really know how to answer that. Every time I look at him my heart breaks a little more. He is so lost and I wish I could help him. He’s a special guy, he really is. He’s just in a very dark place. Everything he’s ever known has been ripped away from him. He’s so angry... *shakes her head and says no more*

How is the vampire community handling the darkness? What are they doing to fight back?
Thistle: Every day is a struggle. We hold onto hope. That is all we can do. We fight with what we have, but it’s hard. The things in the dark are relentless. We’ve lost so many... Hope. That is what keeps us going...

What are you afraid of right now? What are your hopes for the future?
Thistle: This darkness spilling out into the world. If we fail, the consequences of that terrify me more than anything. We to have to stop this, we just have to. That is my greatest hope for the future – that we save the world beyond the darkness before it is devoured.

 * Thistle smiles sweetly*

Well, I can feel the pull of the Crimson universe wanting me back. It has been nice sitting here with you in this little pocket between realities. That is a lovely lamp. Okay, thanks, Sheri, for the fabulous interview. See you again...

Thanks again for meeting with us Thistle.  Good luck!

And a huge thanks to Alana at Dark Obsession Chronicles for helping me with my interview questions!

The Devil Never Forgets a Deal

I, Lilith Straight, was the woman you always wanted to be. I was married to someone better looking than your husband, we lived in that house you always wanted. Within a year, however, all of that changed. My marriage dissolved, my house burned down, and my job hardly paid the bills. So when I was hit by a car and died, I thought my life couldn’t get any worse. Boy, was I wrong.

Hell was not the place I imagined. It was worse. During my brief stay, I learned some disturbing truths about my family. Most worryingly my ancestor’s deal with the devil promising him every female descendent as a succubus.

So these were my options: Life on earth as a soul-sucking seductress. Or death and pass the succubus baton to my sweet little daughter. There was no choice. Welcome to hell on earth, Lilith. Mother, teacher, wanton she-demon.

Straight to Hell is a witty, engrossing read that grabs your attention from the beginning. The book is about Lilith Straight, a down on her luck divorcee, who is struggling to balance the strains of being a single parent plus the additional stress of an immature adult sister and a troubled niece living with her. Right after we are introduced to Lilith and have been given a chance to get to know her, she dies. Lilith knows she was not perfect during her short life, but she was not prepared for where she ended up.

I loved Lilith's witty, sarcastic personality. It was so much fun to be inside her head. Throughout the book we watch her struggle with what she knows is right and what she feels she must do. The tough decisions she makes are always for what she feels is the greater good…her daughter. This is not a story of good versus evil, but more like bad versus worse, and Lilith does the best she can with what she has to work with.

Excerpt

Note from the Author:  I love this scene because it’s the first time Lilith runs into William Benedict, her incubus counterpart.  What happens when two opposites attract?  Sparks fly!

From the corner of my eye, I noticed a man watching me from across the room. I didn’t remember him coming in, not surprising since the evening had been a blur of unfamiliar faces. He had one of those chiseled chins that belong on male models, and thick, dark hair that begged to be tousled. His conservative V-necked sweater and leather loafers looked out of place among the flamboyant hippies and club kids.

My cell buzzed again. Annoyed, I dragged my eyes from the visitor. This time, Ted’s message read, “Sorry. I forgot about your mom.”

The guy in the sweater came closer. I held my breath, hoping he’d stop by.

Once more, my cell vibrated in my pocket. I was tempted to ignore it, but if I did, Ted would continue to text until I answered. His message read: “I would have come to the visitation but had a med emergency.”

Medical emergency, my ass. Like I said before, Ted’s an orthodontist, so unless a kid’s rubber band snapped hard enough to put out an eye, I doubted there was much of a crisis. I quickly sent Ted another text (“Ok. See you later.”) as Mr. V-necked sweater approached. He was over six feet, and I had to tilt my head up to meet his gaze. Oh, there was such sadness in his eyes! No doubt, some of it was due to the funeral. Coupled with that, however, was something deeper. A bottomless well of world-weariness, perhaps, or the weight of a secret that was too much to bear.

I wanted to speak, but couldn’t. The guy rocked me like I was a teenager all over again. My knees felt watery, my cheeks hot, and I had that delicious, warm, tingling between my legs. I wondered if it was okay to put the moves on a guy I’d met at my mother’s funeral. Then again, Carrie would have done it. In fact, she would have leapfrogged over my casket to get at him.

The visitor didn’t take my hand, though I wished he would. Instead, he said, “Ms. Straight?”

And there it was: the killer British accent. Dear gods. I was ready to go up in flames. I dabbed at my sweating forehead and nodded.

“I’m Mr. Benedict.”

He waited, clearly expecting a reply. I uttered a strangled, “Okay.”

“Miss Spry sent me.”

Miss Spry? For a moment, I was too dazzled to remember the name. Then it came to me. Oh right, Miss Spry. The woman who had told me that I was not only dead, but a succubus to boot.

Mr. Benedict continued to look at me with his doleful, brown eyes. “May we speak outside?”

Could he speak with me? He could not only talk to me, he could take me to dinner. He could drive me to his place. He could soil me like a tissue if he wanted. Without a thought to the other people in the room, I floated behind Mr. Benedict like I’d suddenly left the real world for a place where dreams come true.

Once outside, I realized how dark it had become. And cold. I wrapped my arms around myself and shivered. Mr. Benedict carried a coat over one arm but didn’t offer it to me.

When we were clear of the doors, he said, “Miss Spry has a task for you tomorrow morning.”

“A task? What kind of task?” I pictured myself picking up her dry cleaning or running to the store to buy milk.

His mouth tightened in annoyance. “I don’t know. It isn’t our job to ask questions. Just be ready to leave at 10:00 tomorrow morning.” He walked away.

“Wait, ten? That’s the time of my mother’s funeral!”

“That’s not my problem. Just be ready at ten. Wear something appropriate.”

I ran to catch up, tottering on my high heels. “Appropriate for what?”

“Your occupation.”

Occupation? Was he talking about the stretchy slacks and semi-dressy T-shirt that I wore when substitute teaching? But the hard look in his eyes said otherwise.

Suddenly, I felt very stupid. Of course he didn’t mean teacher; he meant succubus. I needed to dress like a slut.

I’d been avoiding thoughts about my new job, but the fact I was expected to do the Devil’s dirty work made my stomach cramp. “I can’t do what Miss Spry wants. No way.”

“You don’t have a choice. It’s our job to follow her orders.”

Our job? What do you mean our, I wondered. Then it struck me. The smoldering gaze, the instant attraction. He was a male version of what I was. An incubus. No wonder I’d wanted to get naked with him in the backseat of my car.
